I'm starting work on a game for Microsoft's XNA, um, thing, whaever you would like to call it, and I don't want to devote time to a game no one would play. I have probably 50 pages of doodles and ideas about single player, multiplayer, balance, game modes, etc. I'll save that for later. What I want to know is what you guys would want in a game? I'll give you basic facts about the game

See map like bird's eye view

You control one person

There is a large talent tree which you can go down, and through gaining xp(still undetermined how you get it) you canget new skills, passives, etc

most skills will jsut be types of shots

the main point of the game is to kill enemiy player using your various shots (fire, ice, etc(i have a tom thought up))

I don't want to hear your game suggestions yet, I'll post later.

what I want to know is what you want in an Indie game, what will keep you coming back for more

for me it would have to be mp focused, high scores, soem sort of persistent leveling(items that boost stats for playing for a bit(not too much though)), constant tourneys

sry about wording alway, i too dislike huge advantages, but i'm up to reward those who play some. like favor points, but better(i currently think they are a waste)

rewards for high scores(items that boost stats)

I am of the opinion that high scores should be rewarded only with vanity items which change your character's look. Especially in player vs player, where a newbie already has quite a disadvantage. I do not see any sense in giving those who already excell the most an advantage against future opponents.

One word, "Titles"!!! Prolly won't sound any bells for you but gosh I was so proud when obtained Scarab Lord title

sry, my wording was poor, i fixed it

i think people should be able to get bonus items through playing, meaybe reaching new levels. but not always. maybe if their were a ranking system for mp , the first ten ranks you can choose rewards, but theres a amx of 50 ranks, so you arent always screwed

point is - reward players with some sorts of items, dont hurt new ones though

music.  I find the XNA games I tend to come back and play again are the ones with good music.  (like put two generic shooters next to each other.    I play the one with better music 90% of the time.  I'd give examples, but the unexciting counter parts are the ones I don't remember the names.   Stardust HD is a good example of music.... I can't think of any of the counterpart names (except geometry wars, but that too has good music))

I liked about world of goo (my fave indie game) and Braid (which I didnt like as much but still thought was kinda cool):

Epic Music ( I actually think this is very important for indie games, anything with a cello is a good way to go)

*A simple but well implimented concept (world of goo wtfpwned in this respect) You arent a dev team: give us something small but well polished.....*

A sense of humour.

Literary/movie references or something to make rthe player smile if he/she works them out

If you have a story don't do a Braid and make it poorly punctuated, Nebulous and removed from the gameplay..... That really pissed me off!

*THIS IS THE ONE THAT MATTERS

If you haven't already done so please play world of goo to see the best indie game I think I've played..... It's literally just a physics engine with a nice skin, but it's still great.

Incidently im serious about the music: I cant think of one indie game I've enjoyed without good music (audiosurf wins here as you play your own music!) Make sure it fits the mood of the game and isn't just something you think is good, because people have widely varying taste.

would most people prefer mutliplayer? i feel like a good single player indie game is cheap enough to have only single player, and vice versa

i personally as fine with either, but i think mp is how to keep people playing.even if there is single player, there needs to be some sort of way to compete with others

I'm waiting for Age of Decadence, by Iron Tower Studios.

A very promising hardcore RPG.

EDIT: my bad, at a better read looks like I completely misunderstand the thread.
