Posts about the game I am creating in C#. I'm looking for help so please comment

I can't tell what games are worth checking out due to the terrible popularity system. Who chose this? It's awful. A 3 star system? Based on popularity? There are no redeeming qualities there. You should really get a ranking based off reviews, be it users, metacritic, a certain company, anything else.

There are currently 6 games with a 3 as popularity.... I am not going to sift through the hundred crappy games to find the decent ones.

Unfortunately, I lost cash and didn't get to support a company I like because this awful system: i bought the witcher off steam.

On Steam, all I did was search rpg, show all, sort by rankings, and their it was on the front page. Steam made it nice. I don't dare use impulses popularity system because popularity rarely ranks things appropriately. new things tend to be higher, whether good or not, and if its popular its probably on front page so it doesn't even matter that it has a high popularity ranking.

EDIT - I just found this on Impulse's site

"Impulse allows users to quickly and easily find their favorite game or software and download it automatically to their PC."

lol

TL:DR

GET A NEW RANKING SYSTEM

what do you guys think should be added/fixed?

The only thing that really bugs me about it is that it's very rare to get popular releases on Day 1. To date, only Prototype and CoH: Tales of Valor have been released on Day 1.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of pushing to get the new anticipated games as they launch - I would love to grab Dragon Age off Impulse, for example, but I don't have much hope of that game appearing on Impulse at all, much less on Day 1.

I agree with the whole Popularity thing being annoying.  A 5 star system would help (and shouldn't be too hard).

I would also like them to add the MetaCritic or GameRankings score.  Or, if those aren't available, some other ranking site.  Even IGN, GameSpot, 1UP, etc would give you at least an idea of the game's quality.  This could even be in addition to the Popularity score.

I truly hope Stardock fixes this because it's one of the few advantages that Steam still has over Impules.

I'm also going to shamelessly link to my thread talking about the On Sale section, since I think it's appropriately distinct from the problem you're addressing.  https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/356096

The delay between game release and availability on Impulse is only going to get shorter with time. IIRC a big problem was the big backlog of games to add and the crappy net connection Stardock had (which made uploading games to Impulse servers a big pain).

There are some infos on the Demigod video diary (starts at 14:10):

I agree with everything said above.

I would also really, really, really like to see Homeworld+Homeworld 2 on Impulse. I lost my disks quite a while ago, so I haven't been able to play them.

Yeah, I know. I chatted with Zoomba a little while back and brought it up and he basically said that they're going to be getting a lot more day 1 releases.

But it was worth a mention.

A working application update history browser would be nice.

on Jun 12, 2009

It's working now - what's your problem with it?

on Jun 12, 2009

Annatar11 -

It hangs for awhile (hourglass spinning), then finally displays an empty window with a scrollbar.  Tried the XML flush (Reset Data) but no help.

EDIT:  Turns out this is happening on just one rig.  Will have to do a full rig flush & see if it gets better.

I only wish that Impuse could use my default browser (Firefox) instead of requiring Internet Explorer.

Obviously more games (both day 1 releases and previous games) would be top priority for me, but I'm pretty sure Stardock is well aware that more games= more sales and popularity for Impulse = more money, so they don't need me telling them that.

One thing Stardock could add to the Impulse client that really should be there is the ability to limit the download speeds. Sometimes, I want to browse the net while downloading a game- it would be nice if I could set 50kb/s aside for that and let Impulse use the rest to download my game.

The website itself really needs a redesign- it doesn't feel very intuitive. It doesn't work correctly with Firefox, anyway (I can never get the front page games to load up). It's usable, but doesn't make a good impression.

A "Your friend is now playing X" feature.

One of the features i love about steam is that when im playing whatever game, i get a pop-up telling me "X person is now playin Y game" and the ability to drop what i'm doing and join them.

on Jun 24, 2009

Perhaps this is already a feature, and is something I simply haven't been able to find, but I'd like to be able to add non-Impulse games to my Impulse Games list. I have many games on my harddrive, and it would be nice to be able to browse them all just by loading Impulse.

I agree with above post, it's a great feature of Steam and hopefully this will come when they finish implementing the Friends system.

The last thing I'd like to be able to do is be able to see whats happening in, for example, Demigod's multiplayer without loading up the game. Just load Impulse and see "Ok, there's 5 custom games running. Oh, one of them is for Australian players, I'll fire up Demigod and join".

More games, that are available outside USA. Steam and D2D get my money because of their larger collections that are available for europeans. So far i have Sins, Entrenchment, and World of Goo bought trough Impulse, a half a dozen form D2D, and over a dozen from Steam. I do always check Impulse when i'm planning to buy a game, but as the above shows, it hasn't really worked out for me.

Drag. And drop.
